Hurley is located right on the border of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, Next to Ironwood. Hurley and Iron County, In general are very ATV friendly, which is one main reason I find myself going back again and again!
There are so many side excursions to take, attractions and events along this trail system, You could go back and have a different experience every time. Read more about this in our “Along The Trails” series of articles.

The area is so great because there is so much access for atvs and the system is huge. Outside of town, the Iron County area is fairly desolate. Wide open trails await you!
Tip: Being so desolate, remember to watch for deer, there are many instances of deer running across the trails.
On one hand, the area is not so desolate that you would run out of fuel or something like that. There is enough services (Fuel, Food) to get you by. On the other hand, It does feel like your in the middle of nowhere, LOL. Which is a great thing!
Hurley is a “larger” town by Iron county standards, It has most of what you need, Grocery stores, ect. Plenty of Restaurants and fuel stations. Overall, a really great area to start any OHV adventure.
The trail system is extensive in Iron county, and they connect into the surrounding counties trail systems as well, so the amount of riding is up to you. Hurley and Iron county in general, make a fantastic home-base!

Lodging in the Hurley area…
It’s not too hard to find great places to stay in Hurley, there are plenty of campgrounds and Hotels in the area.
Personally I really like Schomburg County Park, Along US Hwy 51. This campground has it all, technically the trailhead for the Iron County Trails are next to this campground. In the campground, you have restrooms, shower house and an atv wash bay. Really great set up for a county campground!
Trails in the area are maintained very well, a few rough spots, but this is off-roading!
Saxon & Saxon Harbor are really great areas, Saxon hosts the Iron County Fair in the fall, kinda neat to see the small town fairs. Saxon Harbor is a nice destination on your OHV, You can spend hours on the shores of Lake Superior here. Have a picnic or just take a break from riding. Saxon Harbor does have a great looking campground, May have to do a review at some point.

This area is incredible in fall, the colors combined with the Lake views, incredible!
There are a lot of interesting things to stop off at along the trails in Iron county, Various waterfalls, Memorials, events and more! Can not recommend enough! You can see more of these stops in our other series, “Along The Trails”.
Day trip tip…
This is one of my all-time favorite day trip rides while i’m staying in the Hurley area, ride out the main trail to the west. Your destination would be Saxon Harbor, On Lake Superior. Takes about a half day one way, One-way of solid driving that is. The lake views are fantastic and there are a few bars and restaurants to get food at. There is a gas station in Saxon, Which is kind of separated from Saxon Harbor by a couple miles. This is a trail recommendation during fall!
