The Cheese State Trail System is an old railroad grade trail and is very unique in the State of Wisconsin, in that, it still has many of the old Railroad era bridges and buildings intact along the trails. It’s very cool to see, almost a modern day railroad of sorts, being on your atv and riding past these fantastically maintained structures.

The Trail System itself is small in comparison to the trail systems in Northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, but there is an extensive road network available to get to the surrounding communities which opens up a large amount of riding options.

Having road access wasn’t always the case, this trail used to be very busy, but seems since the road network has opened, The atv traffic is able to disperse a little better and doesn’t seem to be as busy anymore. Which is great, because it opens up economic opportunities for other towns in the region.

There is plenty of restaurants and fuel along these very atv friendly communities! No need to worry your going to run out of fuel in your machine or your belly! Even though the trail system begins in Monroe, Wisconsin, it’s difficult for me to recommend starting there because it is a bigger community, so it’s busier. Hence, the reason this article starts in Gratiot, Wisconsin.
