Bighorn National Forest, Wyoming

Bighorn National Forest, Wyoming

There are 1200 miles of trails in the Bighorn Mountains and You rarely come across anyone else amongst these trails, they are expansive and slow going due to the terrain. The trails in the area are some of the most rugged I have come across and you better either have someone with you or tools of your own, because there is very little help out here. The biggest issue is no cell phone reception, I would recommend having a satellite phone.

I have fallen in love with Wyoming and the trails of the Bighorn National Forest. I should clarify, I have always enjoyed being in Wyoming, but the trails of the Bighorn National Forest have cemented that firmly in my psyche. I have yet to find another place that makes me feel like i do here. It’s a feeling of isolation, peace and clarity! You can’t help but drive along these trails and forest roads and stop along them and take in the scenery or the wildlife off in the distance. Being in the Mountains riding off-road is such a uplifting feeling, it’s amazing out there!

Some of the best trails you will find, very rugged and desolate area making you feel like your way out in the middle of nowhere! Burgess Junction, an unincorporated town in the mountains offers a handful of resorts with food and fuel but there National Forest is huge and very desolate. There are folks camping everywhere in the forest, There are tons of areas for free dispersed camping, which is fantastic. There are no established homes, just a few ranger stations scattered about.

It’s hard to show you the massive elevation changes on these trails. You are either going up or down for miles at a time, It’s truly incredible. The pictures and videos do not do it justice, To the point, I would recommend you know your machine and your capabilities while driving. These trails warrant that kind of caution. Just as I caution people going to the off-road parks in Tennessee, I caution you here as well.

You feel as though your climbing your way to the stars on these trails.

I’m impressed by how well these trails have held up, Usually with climbing in elevation, atvs will gouge and rut the trails. Not so here, even with the excessive climbing, and elevation changes, the trails are in very good shape overall. There are inevitably some areas that are ripped up somewhat, but generally speaking, These trails are in good shape.
